An Appraisal of Intercity Commuting Pattern Using Railway Services in South-Western Nigeria

Tracking the influence of service improvements on passengers particularly is an important component transport management. This study examined characteristics intercity travellers in Economy Class Units (ECU) and recently introduced Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) within Lagos District Nigeria Railway Corporation south-western Nigeria. A structured questionnaire was randomly administered to 1206 traveling these trains over two months with analysis in-volving use regression model. The findings indicate socio-economic accounted for about 90.3% 88.2% variation volume trips made by using DMU ECU respectively. Significant predictors trip train are Occupation (0.137), Vehicle Ownership (0.218), Type vehicle (0.218). On other hand, significant attributes that affect Age (0.274), Education (0.970), (-0.918), Income (0.435), (0.249), type (-0.165). result further indicates Trip Purpose explained 83.5% 86.7% both services. purpose significantly influences Business (0.210), Shopping (0.447) Leisure (-0.463), purposes (0.775). For train, only Other-trip forms (0.753) explaining service. shows similarities services while several useful recommendations ways improve corporation were proffered.
